One Rupee Big Coin (India)

The One Rupee Big Coin refers to the earlier large-sized one rupee coins issued in India before the introduction of smaller stainless-steel rupee coins in the late 1980s. These coins are popularly called “big rupee coins” due to their larger diameter and heavier weight compared to modern ₹1 coins.

🏛️ Historical Importance

  • Early big rupee coins symbolized India’s monetary independence

  • Nickel and cupro-nickel rupees represented cost-effective minting

  • Widely used in daily transactions during the 1950s–70s
