1947 One Rupee Coin of India – Brief Note

The 1947 One Rupee coin of India is an important historical numismatic piece, as it represents the last year of British colonial rule in India. This coin was issued before India became independent on 15 August 1947, making it highly significant for collectors and historians.

The coin bears the portrait of King George VI on the obverse, symbolizing British sovereignty over India at that time. The reverse side features the Indian Tiger standing on a pedestal, a design introduced to represent India’s strength and identity. The 1947 One Rupee coin was minted in .500 silver, weighing approximately 11.66 grams, with a diameter of about 30.5 mm. It was produced at the Bombay Mint and circulated widely during the transitional period just before independence.

1964 - JAWAHARLAL NEHRU COMMEMORATIVE COIN:


Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was the first Prime minister of India from 1947 to 1964. After his sad death on 27th May 1964, to pay homage to the departed leader, a 1 rupee coin was issued on 14th November 1964, in his memory. It is the first commemorative coin issued by India. Also 50 paisa coin was also released.







1969 – MAHATMA GANDHI CENTENARY COIN:


On the birth centenary of Mahatma Gandhi, India issued this  1 rupee commemorative coin on 3rd October 1969. The other coins issued for general circulation in his memory, are in the denomination of 20 paisa, 50 paisa and 10 rupees.




1989 – JAWAHARLAL NEHRU CENTENARY COIN:

Jawaharlal Nehru was the first Prime minister of India from 1947 to 1964. To pay homage to the leader on the centenary of his birth, a 1 rupee coin was issued on 14th November 1988. Another coin issued for general circulation, was in the denomination of 5 rupees. Proof and uncirculated specimens coins issued in the denomination of 20 rupees and 100 rupees.
